TF’s Special Learning Centres Project is an intervention towards qualitative improvement in Government / Government sponsored schools in Kolkata in the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA)segment. They have been envisioned as a support mechanism to these schools which must provide free and compulsory education to all children from 6 to 14 years as per the Right to Education (RTE) Act of 2010. However, the ground reality is that millions of children cannot cope with their studies and therefore, drop out.
As per the RTE Act, Government and SSA-run schools have to provide “Special Training Centres” for children who have dropped out or never been enrolled in schools- to enable them to be enrolled in their appropriate age class. These Centres bridge learning gaps over periods which may run from three months to a maximum of two years inside the school itself. Many schools take the help of NGOs to supplement the teaching staff, curriculum and aids because they are inadequately equipped or staffed themselves
